F-Zero X brings the classic SNES franchise to the N64. It brings with new courses, new game modes and and a 4-player multiplayer. To start off the courses are very well done, the classic courses or cities remain such as Mute City, Big Blue, Silence and Port Town along with some fresh additions. All the classic courses have been given a revamp making them more three dimensional. Mute City has been altered to incorporate as loop and Big Blue is now a ling tube that racers can race on all sides. Boost to fast and you’ll fly right off the bends or forget with side is the top side and when you reach the start finish section you won’t be able to land correctly and crash out. The standard cups remain, Jack, Queen and King now with added ability to alter the difficulty setting. Two new cups have been added, the Joker cup is now the 1 step harder than the King cup, and the X cup. This cup is a random track generator that takes sections of tack from other courses and builds a new completely random track. Incidentally the Rainbow Road track in Joker cup is a copy of the Rainbow Road track in Mario Kart 64 again without the guard rails and a different atmosphere to match the F-Zero style
Racing has been given a make over as well. In the SNES version the top 4 spots were always the 4 main cars in the game, all subsequent cars were all identical. These backmarkers were just small brown pods that just got in the way and really didn;’t have any pace on them. That has been scrapped for this version and now there are 26 new cars and pilots that the player can choose from. As before, each vehicle has its pro’s and cons and each are rated on Grip, Body and Boost. a player can choose a vehicle that a A-rated boost for a fast track or a A-rated body for a tight windy track where collisons are likely. Players also have the ability to amend the speed of their chosen craft to have higher acceleration or hgher top speed on a sliding scale to further add to the uniqueness of each racer. F-Zero X also introduces the “Death Race” mode in which the player must destroy all the other competitors using the nudges or by spinning the craft in an attack. This is against the clock and a perperutal straightforward track.
Multiplayer mode is also a new feature of F-Zero X. This allows up to 4 players to race against each other on the tracks that are available or that have been unlocked by completing the single player cups. Those slot that are not in use by players can be operated by computer. If one of the players ends up retiring before the end of the race, that player can enter the “Vs Slots” in which a slot machine will appear and depending of which three identical pictures the player can match is how adversly affected the remaining players are.
This a fantastic game and the 4 player versus mode is a great party game and a lot of fun. if you ‘ve got an N64 this is an essential purchase.
Where shall i start with this….argueably one of the best, if not THE best game for the N64. It has everything you could want from a Retro video game. It has a single player element which is well constructed and sticks pretty much the plot of the movie. The levels are well-built and include a myriad of weaponry, some of which are borrowed from previous Bond film such as the golden gun. The single players inclusion of time completed available cheats offered an extension to an already extensive element. Making Bond invisible and planting Timed Mines under troops and watching them fly across the room is funny at any time.
The Major selling point of Goldeneye was the 4-player multiplayer. This still is one of the best first person multiplayer modes around. I still rate it above some COD game, mainly because of its simplicity and playability. The levels are compact enough to keep the players in close combat yet have a depth to them so you can withdraw for more ammo or armour. The weapon settings ensure that all players are confined to the same sort of weapons such and pistols or rocket launchers. The health settings can ensure a level playing field so veterans take less to kill and gives the novices more of a chance. Still the best game mode, by a mile, is pistols or Golden Gun on -10 health for all players as it’s a 1-shot deal. Any hesitation and that’s it, your finished. Of course this will inevitably lead to one thing. Every one will want to be Odd Job. You see Goldeneye multiplayer also includes, after unlocking, 64 playable characters, most of which are from the game such as infantry and scientists. It also includes characters from previous Bond films such as Odd Job, Jaws and Baron Samedi. Odd Job is a little shorter than the other characters which makes him ideal game format as fire goes over his head and this can be the difference between winning and losing. As such arguments ensue and revenge sought. This occurs again when playing the Facility level as the bathrooms only have 1 entrance. A nice fortress to which to occupy and sit out a victory.
At the end of the match after much arguments, laughs and the occasional angry word or 2. Goldeneye offers a little cheer. The summary of your performance. This can be the title of “Most Deadly” or “Most Professional” to “Lemming Award” for the most amount of suicides and “Shortest Innings” due to your lack of ability to stay alive. A little humour to lighten the mood.
Overall Goldeneye is a fantastic game and although the character models aren’t amazing this doesn’t detract from the experience and today Goldeneye is still the benchmark to which many FPS games are judged even though Halo and Call of Duty are much prettier and much younger.
SUPER MARIO 64
I’ve been playing Mario 64 a lot recently. I got onto a bit of an N64 kick as Greg turned up with his N64 for a gaming afternoon. I’ve always liked this game and i think it is one of the best Mario games ever. It’s easy to pick up and play and the fact it saves after every star means you can quit whenever you need to. This is always handy if you’ve only got 10 minutes and need to get your gaming fix.
The one thing that keeps this game fresh is that ITS SO FRUSTRATING!!!
…not in a bad way because the controls are numb or the programming is sloppy so you pass through ledges and lifts but because it so simple. All you have to do is jump from one moving lift to another, easy right but you miss it and have to start again. So frustrating but sooo addictive. It also helps that there are so many worlds that you really can’t get bored. Everyone is different and puts focus on a certain ability. water worlds means swimming a lot and, sand worlds and lava lands means you better be accurate with your jumping or the straight up platformer levels which test a bit of everything
This is a great game and anyone who possesses an N64 should own this game
